LEGENDARY MUSES

THE HOUSE FOUNDATIONS

SUPERMODELS (SPRING 2016)

While in the studio, watching the shooting of this campaign, Olivier Rousteing had to smile, thinking about how his adolescent self would have reacted if someone could have traveled back in time to tell him that one day he would be in a New York studio, watching Steven Klein shoot Cindy, Claudia and Naomi for his campaign. “When I was a kid in Bordeaux, it was their editorials that first made clear to me the amazing transformative power of fashion,” he noted. The lighting was clean and direct, and the four icons were posed front and center, since it was obvious that there was no need for any special installation or any lighting tricks. The unique combination of Balmain’s Spring 2016 designs and those powerful women was more than enough.

Pierre Balmain and Josephine Baker

”Olivier, it seems so right that tonight you celebrate your decade with a concert.

You and I both know that fashion and music, when combined together, can somehow make each other so much stronger. And I know that this house has an incredible history of partnering with the greatest artists of the time. Pierre Balmain, of course, dressed so many musical icons.

And, of course, he dressed a legend: Josephine Baker. Someone who both France and America celebrate for her incredible talent, joy, beauty—and above all, for her amazing courage.” Beyoncé

ENTERTWINED WITH MUSIC

This house sets itself apart by its long history of close associations with each age’s greatest musical talents—from Pierre Balmain’s collaborations with Juliette Greco, Dalida and Josephine Baker, to Olivier Rousteing’s partnerships with Beyoncé, Rihanna, JLo, Björk, Lil Nas X and Maluma. The adaptation of Balmain by many of today’s music legends makes perfect sense, of course. It reflects the house’s thoroughly modern DNA, where music and fashion are completely intertwined.

We were able to create a 3D visual representation of Dalida's dress thanks to the kind approval of the Palais Galliera, Musée de la Mode de la Ville de Paris.

Pierre Balmain and Brigitte Bardot

“Pierre Baimain’s famous clients are numerous. We know that Lili Palmer likes only light woolens for day and mohair for evenings and that Ingrid Bergman doesn't have such strong rules (she lets herself be tempted by whatever design might please her and recently finished her fittings for a navy suit that she plans to wear with a mauve-and-white striped muslin blouse). Finally, Brigitte Bardot has caused a lot of talk recently due to a certain purple velvet dress worn under a matching coat, lined with a seaweed-toned mohair, which Pierre Balmain designed just for her.”

ROYAL DRESSING

In the ‘60s and ‘70s, Pierre Balmain designed for Thailand’s royal family, creating an extensive wardrobe for Queen Sirikit, who was considered to be one of the best-dressed women of her time. Her one-of-a-kind Balmain collection was filled with exceptional day, cocktail and eveningwear designs that melded Parisian couture techniques, silhouettes and tailoring with the beauty of Thai silks, embellishments and patterns.

ROYAL DRESSING

Olivier Rousteing builds upon the house’s long history of dressing royalty, creating red-carpet and arena-concert ready designs for today’s music monarchy.

THE SUPERMODELS (SPRING 2016)

Cindy, Claudia and Naomi’s iconic images are often found amongst the jumble on mood boards in my (and almost every other designer’s) atelier. To say that working with them was a dream come true is absolutely not an exaggeration. Watching them and Steven instinctively work together on this campaign, I was struck by the confidence, professionalism and grace on display in front of me. There was never any doubt that the final images would be anything but perfect. Looking at them now, I like to think that perhaps these shots might also, someday, form part of some future designer’s mood board.”

MILLA JOVOVICH (FALL 2018)

Like every French kid growing up in the nineties, Olivier Rousteing was obsessed with “The Fifth Element” and its star, Milla Jovovich. Because of his admiration for her acting, strength, style and talent, he had long dreamed of finding a way to work with Jovovich on a Balmain project. Which is why he was so excited when she agreed to sign on for the house’s Fall-Winter 2018 campaign.

RIHANNA (SPRING 2014)

With his deep love of music and dedication to designing for how his generation lives today, it made perfect sense that Olivier Rousteing would turn to the then 26-year-old Rihanna for Balmain’s Spring 2014 Campaign. "Of course, I wanted to have Rihanna in this campaign because, in addition to being my good friend, she’s also a muse and an icon,” Rousteing explained. “And I love how she owned those clothes—her attitude was that of an ‘80s supermodel.”
